Police on Sunday said a woman who allegedly beat her stepson to death has been arrested.
The 33-year-old suspect hurt the 3-year-old after he allegedly did not listen to her, Yonhap News Agency reported.
On Saturday, the woman was arrested without a warrant after the incident was reported by the boy’s father to the emergency services. He said his wife was at their residence and that the boy was not breathing.
Police responded to the family’s home in eastern Seoul. They noticed something on the floor which they believed was the boy’s vomit.
The victim was found with bruises and scratches. He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.
Also found in the house were a bunch of empty alcohol bottles, which led the police to believe that the stepmother had been drinking.
A report of the local broadcaster MBC said that the boy’s biological mother had been separated from the father since 2019. She has never seen her child since then and reported that the father, too, abused the child.
An autopsy is being arranged by the police to determine the details of the harm on the victim’s body.
Apart from the boy, the stepmom was with her biological daughter when the police arrived. She is also eight weeks pregnant.
The family does not have any history of child abuse, according to a police official. A warrant of arrest is being looked into by the police against the stepmom.
