A total of 14 people were arrested by the police in the eastern city of Chuncheon on Tuesday over smuggling and illegal drugs distribution charges.
Apart from them, four more people who allegedly used narcotics from the peddlers were arrested, officials said, saying TV celebrity Amy was among the charged.
Recently, a drug trafficking operation was spoiled by the Gangwon Police Agency. The said illegal activity was suspected to ship drugs to other countries like Vietnam and the Philippines, the majority for international airmail. They are also suspected to sell contraband to clients in South Korea using Telegram, an instant messaging application.
Among the 14 arrested suspects were the operation’s leader, a man who is in his 40s.
Recoveries, meanwhile, include methamphetamine weighing 6.2 kilograms; ketamine, 791 grams; synthetic cannabinoids, 2.1 kg; ecstasy pills, 1, 344l and marijuana, 167 grams. Also seized from the operation was cash worth 47 million won or US$40,612.
According to the police, the drugs were hidden in electric sockets and its street value can hit 21.9 billion won. In total, 214, 000 people can use the seized contrabands.
In addition to the peddlers, 37 of their clients were also apprehended by Gangwon police. Four of them, including a celebrity, were charged with habitually using illegal drugs.
Police said that the singer and TV celebrity who goes by the legal name Lee Yoon-ji was already turned over to the prosecution. In 2012, she got a suspended prison term for surgical anesthesia propofol consumption and was also fined for illegal use of hypnotic zolpidem in 2014.
